The Stoneham Public Library is governed by a six-member elected Board of Trustees. Members of the Board serve a term of three years. In the event of a vacancy or vacancies on the Board of Trustees prior to the end of the individual(s) term(s) of office, the Trustees shall recommend to the Board of Selectmen the names of acceptable replacements. The Trustees may suggest a single name or multiple names as they deem fit. Such appointments shall be valid until the next town election when any remaining portion of a term of office shall be filled through election, in compliance with Massachusetts State Law.

The duties of the Board of Trustees as outlined in the Code of the Town of Stoneham are:

  • Engage in an ongoing planning process which assesses the needs of the library and the role of the library in the community, and ensure that the library develops to meet those need.
  • Select, appoint and evaluate a Library Director annually using the Evaluating Library Director or other appropriate resources as a guide.
  • Prepare a written employment contract for the staff, dealing with the basic conditions of employment, eligible under Massachusetts G.L. c.78, sec. 34.
  • The Trustees shall leave to the discretion of the Library Director the selection of library materials and the use of library materials and facilities which is in accord with the current standards of the American Library Association as provided for by Massachusetts G.L. c. 78, sec.33
  • Determine the policy of the library and maintain a written record thereof.
  • Advise in the preparation of the budget, approve it, and secure adequate funds to finance the approved budget.
  • Through the library director, supervise and maintain buildings and grounds, as well as regularly review various physical and building needs to see that they meet the requirements of the total library program.
  • Attend meetings with municipal finance and administrative boards when necessary.
  • Speak and act as an advocate for libraries in the community and maintain vital public relations.
  • Study and/or support legislation which will bring about the greatest good to the greatest number of libraries.
